BOOKER PLAYS HOOKER

A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY JOHN LEE HOOKER 

Muruga Booker is a Grammy nominated percussionist who played many gigs with John Lee Hooker from 1966 through 1970. He went on to work with groups like Weather Report and Jerry Garcia. He considers John Lee Hooker his “Blues Godfather.”

To celebrate John Lee Hooker’s 100th birthday anniversary in 2017 / 2018 : Muruga Booker, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee guitarist J.C. “Billy” Davis, P-Funk guitarist Tony “Strat” Thomas, bassist John Sauter, harmonica player Peter Madcat Ruth and singer Misty Love formed the Booker Blues All-Stars, and released a CD called Booker Plays Hooker.

Muruga was blessed to have played live with John Lee Hooker many times in the 60’s-70s in Detroit. They would book them as Hooker & Booker. Booker plays Hooker album is a natural tribute to the 100 years of John Lee Hooker (22/8/1917 to 22/8/2018).

DRUMER, A&R, PROJECT manager …. STEVEN BOOKVICH known as MURUGA BOOKER

Born December 27, 1942, he is an American drummer, composer, inventor, artist, recording artist, and a priest in the Celtic Orthodox Church. Booker was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 27, 1942 and is of Serbian descent. His father, Melvin Bookvich, was a shoemaker who played accordion. He is married to Patti, aka Shakti. He previously lived in Detroit, New York  and Oakland, California. Since 1985, Booker and his family have lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan,where he has his own recording studio called Sage Ct. Studio, as well as an ‘Orthodox Church where he is the priest, Saint Gregory Palamas Celtic Orthodox Church.

BASSIST  is JOHN SAUTER

John Sauter is an American rock and blues musician and bass guitarist from Decatur, Illinois. He has played in Mitch Ryder’s band Detroit and with Ted Nugent. John Sauter grew up in Decatur, Illinois, and began playing bass guitar at age 14. He moved to Chicago, and was soon playing with many Chicago blues musicians such as Otis Spann, and Sam Lay, and rock & roll legends Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry, as well as Corky Siegel and the Siegel–Schwall Band. He moved to Detroit and began playing with John Lee Hooker, along with drummer Muruga Booker, where they were billed as Hooker and Booker. He also began playing at that time with Ted Nugent, an association that lasted many years. In 1971, he became a member of Mitch Ryder’s band Detroit. While in the band, he recruited his friend Steve Hunter to be the guitarist, and they toured with the band and recorded the self-titled album Detroit, which was produced by Bob Ezrin. Sauter joined the newly reformed band Cactus with Rusty Day in 1976, and played with them for a while. After that project ended, Sauter and Day eventually formed a band called The Pelicans, which featured Sauter on bass, Rusty Day (vocals, harmonica), K.J. Knight (drums, vocals), Steve Dansby (guitar) and Jody Blair (rhythm guitar). In 1977, he recorded Weekend Warriors with guitarist Ted Nugent, and they toured together for many years. Sauter pioneered the use of a tremolo/vibrato system and a bottleneck slide while playing bass.

GUITARIST is BILLY DAVIS

Davis was born in Bentonia, Mississippi, US, and then as a child moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Davis became inspired to play guitar at the age of 8, when he heard “That’s All Right” by Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup. In 1951, at the age of 13 he moved to Detroit, Michigan where lived in the predominantly black area of the city, referred to as “Black Bottom”, and he began taking guitar lessons from Bosie Gatlin, who taught him how to play Muddy Waters’ song “Baby, Please Don’t Go”. In 1951, Davis met John Lee Hooker through his mother, who was a friend of hers from Mississippi. Hooker introduced Davis to Jackie Wilson, and they both became close friends, and collaborated musically throughout their lives. In 1955, after graduating from Miller High School in Detroit, he formed Billy Davis & The Upsetters, and they worked for Motown founder Berry Gordy, backing up musicians such as Smokey Robinson and Marv Johnson at live performances. In 1956, Davis was spotted by Henry Booth, who was a singer for The Midnighters, and he convinced Hank Ballard to hire Davis as the guitarist for the band, as a replacement for Cal Green. Davis played with The Midnighters until the dissolution of the band in 1965, and again during their reunion tours in the 1980s.The Midnighters continued to draw large audiences at a rate of nearly 300 booking dates a year in the early 1960s. In 1959, while playing with The Midnighters in Seattle, Washington, he met Jimi Hendrix, who was just 16 at the time, along with Hendrix’ father Al Hendrix. Davis let Jimi play his guitar and gave him some lessons, which was the first time that Hendrix had played an electric guitar. Inspired by Davis’ onstage antics and style, Hendrix soon began adopting the stage act that he became known for, including playing his guitar with his teeth, and playing behind his back. Davis remained friends with both Jimi and Al Hendrix throughout their lifetimes. In 1959, Davis also met blues guitarist B.B. King, while they were both performing in Atlanta, Georgia, and they remained close friends until King’s passing in 2015 …

LEAD VOCAL is MISTY LOVEa MOTOWN DIVA 

Misty Love is an American, multi-platinum award-winning rock, and Rhythm & Blues singer, who is best known for her association with Kid RockSheryl Crow, and Ben Harper.

Misty Love was born in Tampa, Florida and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. Misty was influenced by the Motown sound, and decided to become a singer at a young age. She currently resides in both Detroit, Michigan and Las Vegas, Nevada. After performing with many different bands around the Detroit area, her first big break came when she was selected as a replacement for Caroline Crawford to be the lead singer for Bohannon. Between 1997 and 2003, Misty was a backing vocalist for Kid Rock, touring and appearing on the albums, Devil without a Cause (1998), Cocky (2001), and Kid Rock (2003), and she also sang on the Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow platinum-selling song “Picture” (2003). She was featured on Kid Rock’s breakout Grammy Award-nominated single “Bawitdaba“, and “Cowboy“. During her time with Kid Rock, she appeared on many television shows and specials including Dick Clark’s American Music Awards, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The David Letterman Show. Misty sang in the Grammy Award-winning movie Standing in the Shadows of Motown, and her vocals can also be heard in the soundtracks of the movies Coyote UglyShanghai Noon, and Ready To Rumble. In 2009, along with Motown Alumni Association President Billy Wilson, she helped to create the Detroit Black Music Awards, which are held annually on the first Sunday of August, at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. In association with the Motown Alumni Association, Misty Love has helped to produce several tribute shows including “A Tribute to Mary Wells”, “A Tribute to Kim Weston”, and “Tribute to the Motown Divas”.

GUITARIST is TONY “STRAT” THOMAS

He is an American funk and rock guitarist from Highland Park, Michigan, and is best known for his work with George ClintonParliament, and the P-Funk All-Stars. Thomas has also recorded extensively with Muruga Booker, and is a guitarist in Muruga & The Cosmic Hoedown Band and Muruga Blues All-Stars. As a teenager, Thomas fell in love with the sound of the Fender Stratocaster guitar, and his mother eventually bought him one, earning him the nickname “Strat” ever since. He quickly learned how to play and he soon joined a Detroit, Michigan reggae band called Onyx. In 1979, Thomas and Donnie Sterling formed a P-Funk offspring group called Sterling Silver Starship, and an album was recorded, but was never released. Thomas and Sterling left Sterling Silver Starship in 1981 and formed a group, Kiddo, and they recorded a self-titled album that was released by A&M Records. In 1982 Thomas played guitar on George Clinton’s first solo recording project Computer Games, which included the hit songs Atomic Dog and Loopzilla. Thomas went on to record through the 1980s with P-Funk, and was featured on many of their biggest-selling records. In 2014 Thomas joined fellow P-Funk All-Star Muruga Booker to form Muruga & The Cosmic Hoedown Band, and they recorded several projects including a couple with George Clinton and several other members of the P-Funk All Stars. In 2015 Thomas and Muruga & The Cosmic Hoedown Band performed at the eighth annual Concert of Colors in Detroit, Michigan, performing with the Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue, and playing Maggot Brain.  Thomas’ guitar work with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic related projects has been sampled by many artists, including Snoop DoggDr. DreIce CubeDigital UndergroundToo ShortTweedy Bird Loc and Ruthless Rap Assassins. Due to his guitar tone and playing style, Thomas has been compared to Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Hazel.

HARMONICA is PETER MADCAT RUTH

Peter Madcat Ruth is a Grammy Award-winning virtuoso harmonica player based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan. But Madcat doesn’t just play blues harp: he also sings and plays ukulele, guitar, high-hat, jaw-harp, penny-whistle, kalimba, banjo and other folk instruments from around the world.  Madcat’s repertoire of styles includes Blues, American Roots Music, Folk Music, Jazz, and World Music. Madcat tours with The Madcat Midnight Blues Journey, Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, and The Big Joe Manfra Blues Band, as well as doing solo performances. Peter Madcat Ruth has established an international reputation through his exhilarating, riveting virtuosity on the harmonica. His expertise on this instrument has amazed audiences world-wide. He is equally at home playing blues, folk music, jazz, country, or rock and roll. Performance Magazine refers to him as “A harmonica virtuoso who is rapidly approaching legend status.” Madcat’s music has been evolving for over 50 years. It started in the Chicago area in the early 1960’s, with Madcat playing folk/blues on guitar and harmonica. By the late 60’s he had immersed himself in the Chicago Blues and was studying harmonica with Big Walter Horton. In the early 70’s Madcat moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he was a key presence in two of Ann Arbor’s finest progressive rock bands: New Heavenly Blue and Sky King. By the mid 70’s Madcat was touring the world with jazz pianist Dave Brubeck. In the 80’s, Madcat went solo infusing the folk/blues tradition with elements of rock and jazz. In 1990, Madcat teamed up with guitarist/singer Shari Kane to form the duo Madcat & Kane. For the past twenty three years they have been touring nationally and internationally. And In 1998 Madcat teamed up with Chris Brubeck to form Triple Play and also started performing with Big Joe Manfra in Brazil. Madcat’s experience is extensive. He has been an invited guest performer at many harmonica festivals in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. His harmonica playing is heard on over 100 CDs and LPs. National television and radio appearances, symphony orchestra performances, radio and television advertisements, and harmonica workshops all attest to Madcat’s reputation as one of the best and most versatile harmonica players in the world. Madcat is more than an expert musician. He is also performer who has such a good time playing music that audiences, ranging from pre-schoolers to senior citizens, delight in his performances. His enthusiasm is unpretentious and contagious.
